The Story of Us (1999)

My Review

“The Story of Us” is a comedy-drama film about a married couple navigating the collapse of their fifteen year relationship. They must decide between divorcing or sticking it out in a marriage they have a lot invested in, including two children. Director Rob Reiner (“Ghosts of Mississippi” 1996) and screenwriters Alan Zweibel and Jesse Nelson put together an interesting anatomy of a marriage which relies much on the chemistry of the two stars, Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, which is excellent, by the way.

Co-stars of the show are Rita Wilson, Rob Reiner, Julie Haggerty, Tim Matheson, Lucy Webb, Bill Kirchenbauer, and Paul Reiser. Included is a clever fantasy sequence with four big name actors playing the couple’s parents. They are Betty White and Red Buttons as Willis’s parents and Jayne Meadows and Tom Poston as Pfeiffer’s mom and dad. It is essentially an extended cameo appearances by the four legendary stars. The watchable “The Story of Us” was not successful at the box office for producer Rob Reiner, Castle Rock Entertainment, and Universal Pictures. It was filmed at the Culver Studios in Culver City and around the Los Angeles area. There are hints in the film that Pfeiffer is an avid Dodger fan.
