My Review

“The Thin Man Goes Home” is another “Thin Man” picture where detective Nick Charles takes his wife, Nora, and their dog, Asta, back to his home town to visit his parents. They are unaware that Nick’s presence has already frightened a spy into action, with the drama and comedy proceeding from there. Director Richard Thorpe (“White Cargo” 1942) did a great job at the helm of this fifth film in the “Thin Man” series with its usual combination of witty banter, humor, and crime drama. The excellent screenplay was penned by Robert Riskin and Dwight Taylor, with the story developed by Riskin and Harry Kurnitz.

The stars include William Powell and Myrna Loy as the Charles’, Lucile Watson and Harry Davenport as Nick’s parents, Leon Ames as the spy, Gloria DeHaven as Laura, Anne Revere as Crazy Mary, Donald MacBride as the police chief, Edward Brophy as Brogan, and Donald Meek as Willie Crump. The watchable “The Thin Man Goes Home” was popular escapist entertainment at the World War II box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed at MGM Studios in Culver City, California.
