The Truman Show (1998)

My Review

“The Truman Show” is the story of a 30-year-old man whose entire life has been on television without his realizing it. He starts getting suspicious that something is amiss when a light fixture from a movie set falls from the sky. Director Peter Weir (“The Year of Living Dangerously” 1982) skillfully put together this movie with a far-fetched premise into a believable and quality project from a well written screenplay by William Niccol.

Jim Carrey delivers an outstanding performance in the lead role of Truman Burbank, probably the best in his career of off-best roles. Co-stars include Laura Linney as his wife, Ed Harris as the manipulative television producer, Noah Emmerich as his best friend, Natascha McElhone as his first girl friend, Holland Taylor and Brian Delate as his parents, Paul Giamatti as the director, Philip Baker Hall and John Pleshette as network brass, Peter Krause as Truman’s boss, and Harry Shearer as a talk show host.

The watchable riveting melodrama “The Truman Show” was very popular at the box office for Scott Rudin Productions and Paramount Pictures. It received three Oscar nods for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Harris), and Best Screenplay. It was filmed in Seaside, Florida.
