My Review

Nicholas Cage stars as a fictionalized version of himself in the action-comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” He plays movie star Nick Cage who has trouble finding roles and has decided to retire from Hollywood. His agent gets him a job paying one million dollars to appear at a billionaire’s birthday party, but even this takes a chaotic turn when the CIA recruits him to spy on the wealthy businessman.

This film is well directed by Tom Gormican, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Etten, with Cage doing an excellent job of portraying himself. Cage was able to stay out of the way because Gormican made this a high quality action-comedy picture so the emphasis was on the story and not so much on Cage. A comparison that comes to mind is John Malkovich also playing himself in “Being John Malkovich” (1999).

The supporting cast includes Pedro Pascal, Sharon Hogan, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz, Allessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Paco Leon, Demi Moore as his ex-wife, and Neil Patrick Harris as his agent. “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” was a flop at the box office for Cage’s own production company Saturn Films, Burr! Productions, and Lionsgate Films. It was filmed in Croatia and Hungary.
