“Them!” is a science fiction horror movie about atomic tests in the New Mexico desert which have mutated ants into giant, man-eating monsters. Scientists investigating the situation find they have traveled far and wide, including into the Los Angeles storm drains. The scifi drama proceeds from there, well handled by director Gordon Douglas and screenwriters Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes. The film does not have the best production values, but is fun entertainment nonetheless, with plenty of action scenes, passable performances, and typical 1950’s special effects.
The stars include James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, James Arness, Fess Parker, William Schallert, Leonard Nimoy, Dub Taylor, and Sandy Descher. This watchable B-scifi thriller “Them!” was a modest hit at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in Los Angeles County, California, especially around Lancaster and the Mojave Desert.
