“Thieves’ Highway” is an engrossing film noir about a truck driver out for revenge against the men who allegedly caused an accident in which his father lost his legs. Richard Conte delivered a passionate performance in the lead role. Perennial villain Lee J. Cobb also did quite a number as the heavy of the piece. Co-stars include Jack Oakie, Valentina Cortese, Hope Emerson, Barbara Lawrence, and Joseph Pevney.
Director Jules Dassin (“Never on Sunday” 1960) and screenwriter A. I. Bezzerides (who adapted the script from his own 1949 novel “Thieves’ Market”) put together this watchable film and good escapist entertainment which was a modest success in theaters for 20th Century Fox. It was filmed in San Francisco.
