My Review

“Under the Silver Lake” is an attempt by director-writer David Robert Mitchell (“It Follows” 2014) to make a modern film noir. The result is a long, drawn out, and confusing motion picture with a muddled plot that lasts 139 interminable minutes. Mitchell’s writing and direction is terrible.

The story follows a 33-year-old man in Los Angeles who embarks on a journey to find out what happened to his neighbor, a young woman who suddenly vanishes. Despite the sluggish storyline, the two principal actors deliver good performances – Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man of 2012 and 2014) and Riley Keough (daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley).

Co-stars include Topher Grace, Jimmi Simpson, and Grace Van Patten (daughter of producer Timothy Van Patten and niece of Dick Van Patten). “Under the Silver Lake” was a huge box office bomb for Boo Pictures and A24 Films. It was filmed across the Los Angeles area.
