Welcome to Acapulco (2019)

My Review

“Welcome to Acapulco” is an action comedy film about video game designer on his way to a video game convention in New Mexico when he gets on the wrong airplane flight to Acapulco, Mexico. The minute he arrives he is mistaken for a courier of some sort, as numerous individuals continually ask him for “the package.” He finds himself on the run from powerful criminals and their goons as well as from government agents.

The “comedy” proceeds from there, not very well managed by director Guillermo Ivan, who has sloppily put together what is basically an unfunny formulaic film from a terrible screenplay by Garry Charles and Robert Benjamin. The cast includes Michael Kingsbaker, Ana Sarradilla, Michael Madsen, Paul Sorvino, William Baldwin, Bradley Gregg, Michael Papajohn, Jeannine Kaspar, Jack Duarte, and Guillermo Ivan as Raphael.

One positive aspect of the film is the expert cinematography by Saro Varjabedian. His filming in and around Acapulco captured the photogenic qualities of the Mexican city. Box office stats are not available for “Welcome to Acapulco,” but it is unlikely that this unwatchable joke of a film had any success in theatrical release, much to the chagrin of producer Guillermo Ivan, Open Frames, Golden Ceiba Productions, Global Group, and Entertainment One.
