My Review

“Of Mice and Men” tells the story of two Depression Era drifters who work on a farm in California. Things proceed smoothly until one finds he cannot control his temper, which leads to fatal results. Director Gary Sinise (“Miles from Home” 1988) put together a fine drama with outstanding production values, memorable performances, and excellent writing by Horton Foote. The screenplay was adapted from the 1937 novel of the same name by John Steinbeck.

Gary Sinise and John Malkovich are the two principal performers, with a supporting cast consisting of Ray Walston, Noble Willingham, Richard Riehle, Joe Morton, Casey Siemaszko, Sherilyn Fenn, John Terry, Moira Harris, and Mark Boone Junior as the bus driver. The watchable “Of Mice and Men” was a disappointment at the box office for producer Gary Sinise, Mice Productions, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California.
