“Kingpin” is a sports comedy telling the story of a 1970’s bowling prodigy who loses his hand, and years later meets up with the rival bowler responsible. The comedy and drama proceed from there, directed by Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly (“Dumb and Dumber” 1994) and written by Barry Fanaro and Mort Nathan. The film does contain spotty humor, but too often the subject matter descends into vulgarity and crudeness.
The cast includes Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel, Bill Murray, Chris Elliot, Lin Shaye, and Rob Moran. The unwatchable “Kingpin” performed poorly at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Motion Picture Corporation of America, Rysher Entertainment, and MGM/UA Distribution Company. It was filmed in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
